LinkedIn is a great networking resource for professionals. Most candidates maintain a LinkedIn profile nowadays and, if that is your case, you should include your LinkedIn URL on your resume. However, there some steps you should go through before you include your LinkedIn URL. Otherwise, it might not be helpful or even hurt your candidacy.

How to Find your LinkedIn Profile URL

The first thing you need to do is to find your LinkedIn URL.

  1. Go to https://www.linkedin.com and log in with your username and password
  2. Click the “Me” icon on the top right of your LinkedIn homepage
  3. Click “View Profile
  4. On your profile page, click “Edit Public Profile and URL” on the right side of the screen
  5. Your LinkedIn URL will be displayed under “Edit your custom URL”. The URL address starts with “LinkedIn.com/in.”
  6. Copy the link and paste it onto your resume

Why You Should Include your LinkedIn URL on Your Resume

Your LinkedIn Profile URL is your digital contact information through which other professionals and recruiters can find you.

Having a LinkedIn Profile and adding your URL to your resume not only gives you credibility as a professional but also provides recruiters with extra information that can be key to get you a job interview.

Your LinkedIn URL can be a great way to increase your chances to be shortlisted for an interview. Recruiters resort to it to find more details about something that caught their interest, to do additional vetting and see if your resume and profile are consistent, and to look for professional references.

On the other hand, if it is incomplete or contains any inconsistency or something that makes you look unprofessional, it can hurt your application efforts.

What you Should Do Before Sharing your LinkedIn URL

Before you add your LinkedIn Profile URL to your resume:

  1. Make sure your LinkedIn Profile is up-to-date and complete, including a unique headline and professional summary
  2. Check that your resume and LinkedIn Profile are consistent
  3. Your LinkedIn Profile should provide additional information to the recruiter, it should not simply be a copy of your resume
  4. Add a professional-looking photo, which should be high-quality and have good lighting
  5. Customize your LinkedIn URL to make it look more professional

How to Customize Your LinkedIn URL

Your default LinkedIn URL is typically your first and last name plus a sequence of numbers and letters. That makes it harder to find your profile and looks unprofessional on your resume, so make sure you customize it before adding it to your contact information.

  1. Go to https://www.linkedin.com and log in with your username and password
  2. Click the “Me” icon on the top right of your LinkedIn homepage
  3. Click “View Profile
  4. On your profile page, click “Edit Public Profile and URL” on the right side of the screen
  5. Your LinkedIn URL will be displayed under “Edit your custom URL
  6. Click on the pencil icon on the right of the URL and customize it
  7. Try to make it your first and last name. If it is not available, add your middle initial or add a short phrase that corresponds to your career.

Now that you have your customized LinkedIn URL, add it to your resume and increase your chances to get hired!
